Place 1604 - Downtown Acadie
The City of Dieppe and the
Economic Development Corporation of the City of Dieppe have assembled
of over 13 acres of land in the centre of the city for the purpose of
creating a new vibrant city centre that reflects the spirit of the
urban Acadian community. The lands are located to the south east of
Champlain Street and Acadie Avenue, the main intersection in Dieppe,
and include the current city hall.
Acadian Properties Ltd.
and Acadian Construction (1991) Ltd. has been selected by the City of
Dieppe as the primary developer for this unique opportunity to develop
the first Acadian urban center. When completed, the integrated complex
will include a new city hall, office buildings, restaurants,
entertainment and other commercial establishments, multiple residential
buildings, hotel, cultural centre, new farmers' market, parking, a
plaza, and extensive urban public spaces which will include an outdoor
theater and a veteran's memorial.
Place 1604, named in honor
of the first Acadian settlement in North America, will be a destination
for local residents of all ages as well as tourists form all walks of
life. It will provide a central gathering place for current community
events and activities and provide the perfect setting for new
initiatives.
The estimated total cost
of the project will exceed $50 million and will be the focal point for
urban Acadian culture in New Brunswick. Construction of the initial
phases is scheduled for the Spring of 2005.

Design Workshop (NB) Ltd.
is the primary architectural firm for the Place 1604 project. Guy

extensive design experience that is essential in creating vibrant, yet
practical, design solutions that reflect the aspirations and culture of
Acadie.
BDA Landscape Architects (www.bdaltd.ca),
established in 1975 by Jim Sackville, APALA, CSLA, is the urban planner
and landscape architect for Place 1604. BDA specializes in the planning
and design of downtown redevelopment projects and was recognized in
2001 with the CSLA National Award for excellence in design. Jim
Sackville's skill and experience is vital in creating public spaces
that will become the focal point for the Dieppe community and the many
activities, such as the weekly (Mecredi Show) that are so important to
families in Dieppe.
